ORANGUTAN

Find them in the Primate House.

Male orangutans are significantly larger than females, weighing between 255 and 300 pounds! Females weigh between 100 and 130 pounds. The orangutan’s long coat is coarse. The hair of an orangutan can vary from bright orange or red to a maroon or dark chocolate brown. An orangutan’s arms can measure seven feet when outstretched; much longer than their legs. The orangutan’s face is much darker than the reddish coat. Mature males have large, pendulous cheek flanges which make them easily distinguishable from females. The cheek flanges may help resonate the sound of the male’s call.
