- Koh-i-noor Rapidograph ULTRADRAW “Black India” Drawing Ink, nozzle top, 3/4 oz. (Not the same as regular India Ink)
- Black Non-waterproof Ink: such as Sumi-e Ink (liquid) or non-waterproof India Ink
Pens:
- Pigmented or Gel Pens, acid-free, light-resistant: e.g.: Staedtler Liner pens, .01 & .005 black; Jelly Roll or Pilot Gel Pens, Black (other colors optional), fine & med
- Bamboo Pen or Bamboo Stick
- Penholders:
- For Crowquills (with cylindrical base)
- For Calligraphy-points (semi-cylindrical base)
- Crowquill or Hawkquill Pen Points:
- Flexible Hawkquill or Crowquill pen nib, e.g. Hunt108 (or other brand)
- Short, stiff Crowquill pen nib, e.g. Hunt102 (or other brand)
- Bowl point pen nib, e.g. Hunt 512
- Lettering pen nib, fine point, e.g. Hunt C-6 (Optional)
- *Technical Drawing Pen, .18 (00); .25 (0); or .35 (1).35
Recommend for durability: Staedtler (StaedtlerMars) or Alvin
Other (cheaper but fragile): Koh-i-noor Rapidograph (Note: “Rapidograph”, Koh-i-noor's brand name, is often used to refer to other Tech Pens, but not all Tech Pens are Rapidograph.)
- Scratchboard Knife Points: 1 diamond, 1 spade; Speedball or Ampersand (These fit into the Calligraphy Point Penholders.)
Brushes:
- Synthetic Round Watercolor Brush, med (#6 - #8)
- Synthetic Round Watercolor Brush, sm (#2 or so)
- Asian-style Bamboo Brush, approx #6 – 8 (bamboo handle, brown hairs)
- Niji Waterbrush, S, M or L round, or Flat
Papers:
- Bristol, smooth or plate surface, 1 or 2 ply, 11x14 pad (Recommend Strathmore 500 series)
- Paper for pens (sized or surface-treated for minimal bleeding), 9x12, (e.g. Pentalic Paper for Pens – less expensive than rag, OK for practice)
- High-quality Drawing Paper pad, 11 x 14 (100% Rag (Cotton); Acid-free)
- *Scratchboard: 1 white, 1 black Canson, Ampersand (Claybord), or EssDee (Opt – see below)
- *1 - 3 sheets Drafting Film (polyester or acetate) w/ at least one drawing surface. (Opt – see below)
- Other: We'll try other papers in class.
Misc:
- Kneaded eraser
- Pink Pearl Eraser
- White Vinyl Eraser
- Dr. Martin's Bleedproof White (an opaque watercolor or gouache in jar)
- Artist tape, 3/4”
- Journal: Required for BZAI Certificate students
