Como's camps focus on expanding each child's appreciation for the natural world
while meeting zookeepers and gardeners, having "behind the scenes" experiences and meeting Como's plant
and animal
ambassadors up close!

Camps are taught by specially trained, professional instructors.
A SUPERVISED LUNCH PERIOD is available for campers who
attend both a morning camp and an afternoon camp in the same week. Box lunches are available to purchase or children can
bring their own lunch.
Cost for box lunch: $6.00
EARLY DROP OFF/LATE PICK-UP is available upon request.
Cost: $7.00/session
(Confirmation/information packets are mailed approximately
two weeks prior to (first) camp to all registered campers. Sign
up for early drop off/late pick-up and supervised lunch can
be made at that time.)
Camps are specifically designed to be compatible with children's grade level they are currently in or will have completed by the end
of the 2007 - 2008 school year.
COMPANION CAMPS
Como's camps are half-day, week-long sessions, but are set up
so that all-day adventures are available by registering for
two camps (morning and afternoon) in the same week within
the same age group.
Each camp listed below is identified with a campanion camp to
make scheduling all-day adventures easier.

Bugs, worms, potatoes and seeds – life is busy below the ground! Get dirty as campers learn what is so wonderful about dirt. Explore things that dig, burrow, sprout or eat the dirt and learn why so many creatures depend on soil to survive. (Soap and water included in camp fee!)

How are ostriches, giraffes and turtles like dinosaurs? What do fossils teach us about prehistoric times? Did you know you can tell if an animal was a plant or meat-eater by looking at its skull? Discover clues leftover from the time of the dinosaurs as we learn to make fossils, go on a paleontological dig and meet some modern relatives of dinosaurs!

DC168 - BUGMANIA – K-1st Grade Camp
If you are big on bugs, then this is the camp for you! Get ready to get your hands grubby as we search for and examine worms, cockroaches, millipedes, spiders, butterflies and more. Campers will learn the parts of an insect, discover how some bugs grow, participate in a ladybug release in the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, eat “buggy” treats and even bring some bugs home (don’t worry…they won’t be alive!)

Go cat crazy as campers spend a week learning the ins and outs of Como’s cats. Discover the special adaptations each species possess, explore the various habitats where cats live and see how cats hunt for food. “Dip” behind the scenes and learn how Como relies on and recycles its water resources. Encounter a variety of water-loving plants and animals as you “dive” into the important relationships water plays in survival. Play a role in feeding the sea lions, travel to the ocean to visit the penguins and practice writing a "Sparky Show." Campers will have fun while they “discover” the wonderful world of water!

The Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is an inspiring place to practice and learn art skills. Students will apply observation skills to the many live plant and animal subjects at Como while exploring photography, painting, and drawing. Campers will also learn to use some unlikely art materials to create art. This camp creatively combines learning about the natural world and learning to artistically express yourself.

Take a journey from the Arctic to the equator in search of unique survival techniques. Whether its carnivorous plants or frogs that hatch offspring from their backs, campers will learn about plant and animal survival strategies. Campers will even be put to the “survival challenge” test when they must try out their own survival skills in a competition to earn the title “Fittest Survivor.”

If you have ever wanted to work with plants and animals, then don't miss this unique behind-the-scenes camp! Participants will learn the basics of zoo-keeping, gardening, and educating the public through hands-on experiences. Students will have opportunities to: meet a zoo veterinarian, assist the gardeners with behind-the-scenes plant care, prepare animal diets and enrichment, learn basic animal care and handling skills from the professionals, and tour behind the scenes throughout the Zoo and Conservatory.
