Parent/child preschool classes are offered
twice a week. They are designed for
preschool children ages 4 and 5 and
accompanied wth an adult.
All classes include live animal or plant visits
and/or tours.

Black and gold, green and blue … butterflies are pretty to me, how about you?  Discover how these fascinating creatures use their color to protect themselves and more as we journey through the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory’s Enchanted Butterfly Garden.

FIN-TASTIC FISH
Why are fish slimy?  Which body parts help fish swim?  Through games, crafts, and stories, we’ll learn the answers to these questions and have some “fin-tastic” fun learning about fish!  We’ll even get to feed the beautiful koi fish at Como.

GIRAFFES GALORE
Learn the wonders of these African gentle giants.  Discover where giraffes live, see what they eat and learn how they protect their calves.  We will even visit our resident giraffes and see how Como zookeepers take such good care of them.

MONKEY BUSINESS
Swing your way over to Como Zoo to meet some of our monkey ambassadors.  We will meet a primate zookeeper, discover what makes monkeys so unique in a game of Monkey Bingo, learn how monkeys differ from apes, and see how they spend their days.  You’d be bananas to miss this one!

OOEY, GOOEY, & YUCKY
Did you know that some plants smell like rotten meat to attract beetles?  Or that leaf-cutter ants poop on leaves to grow fungus to eat?  Slimy, gross, ooey, gooey and yucky stuff will be the highlight of this class.  We’ll make slime, meet some disgusting plants and animals, eat a “bug,” create a grotesque craft and other yucky fun!

From a heart-shaped leaf or a HUGE palm frond to scented allspice or holey Swiss cheese leaves, look for lots of leaves in the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. Don't "leave" without creating your own leaf book and take-home experiment!

GOING BATTY
Fly on over to meet Como's very own bat ambassadors as they help us dispel some common bat myths. Investigate how bats move, learn how they fly in the dark, and see what they eat. We will do a "hands-on" bat project and read a “batty” story too.

WONDERFUL WOLVES
Have a howlin' good time as we investigate wonderful wolves. Be sure to dress for the weather as we visit Como Zoo's "Wolf Woods." We will see what wolves eat, learn how wolves communicate, and discover why wolves play.

SPOOK-TACULAR SPIDERS!
Spiders are much more than just small, eight-legged, eight-eyed creatures that spin webs. Did you know that some spiders don’t even spin webs? WINTER WONDERLAND
People turn on the heat and wear warmer clothes to cope with the cold of winter, but animals can't do that. Woodchucks, snakes and turtles hibernate. Some birds and butterflies migrate. Squirrels and mice store seeds. We'll meet some Minnesota animals, watch a puppet show, and play a game while learning how animals survive the cold winter months until spring.
