Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, in partnership with Hamline University, offers a variety of professional development workshops for teachers looking to further their understanding of the natural world.  Upon completion of each course, students will earn one semester credit through Hamline University’s Center for Global and Environmental Education.

BATS: CREATURES OF THE NIGHT
Bats are the keystone species of the ecosystem in which they live. Learn about the historical relationships between bats and cultures of the world. Dispel common myths about these creatures of the night as you explore a variety of practical classroom activities. Gain familiarity with conservation efforts worldwide, and meet the resident bats of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.

RICHES OF THE RAIN FOREST
Take a trip to the tropics right here in St. Paul!
With Como Park Zoo and Conservatory’s Tropical Encounters exhibit as our backdrop, learn about the riches of the rain forest during this interactive class. We’ll explore exhibits and meet tropical animals up close, discover intricate connections between the plants, animals and people of the rain forest and learn about sustainable practices. You will leave this class with ideas and activities designed to teach your students about this vital ecosystem and how it can be sustained.

POLAR BEARS, PENGUINS, AND PUFFINS
Explore the world of these fascinating aquatic animals!
Gain a broad introduction to the habitat, anatomy, cultural importance and conservation initiatives of these polar animals.  Spend some time observing the animals in their exhibits to learn more about husbandry in the zoo.  Explore a variety of practical classroom activities designed to inspire your students to learn more about these furry and feathery friends.

PLANTS, PEOPLE, AND CULTURE
Uncover the mysterious connections between plants, people, and culture.
Essential to human survival, plants provide oxygen, transportation, food, shelter, medicine, myth, and ritual to people around the world.  Using the vast and unique plant collection of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, we will journey through the gardens to discover some of the important roles that plants play in the environment and human societies.  You will leave this class with ideas and resources designed to aid in introducing your students to the exciting fields of economic botany and ethnobotany.
