Como Shuttle Service Begins

Visitors can avoid parking hassles with our free shuttle service. The shuttle bus allows passengers to board at the staffed off-site parking lot at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, located on the south side of Como Avenue across from the State Fair’s Warner Coliseum and within minutes of the front doors of the Visitor Center. The shuttle runs continuously 9:30am-6:30pm. Weekend service runs April 20-September 29 and daily service begins June 1 and runs through August 9. The buses are wheelchair and stroller accessible.

Summer Flower Show
May 4 thru October 6

The Summer Flower Show displays the greatest plant diversity of any of the five Sunken Garden Flower Shows, as well as the longest season. Some new plants for the 2013 Summer Show are the Cartwheel series of Gerbera Daisy, with very large, semi-double flowers, Buddleja Buzz magenta, the richly fragrant Origanium Kent Beauty with its hop like flowers, Cassia Popcorn with leaves that smell like popcorn, Kangaroo Paw Cape Red Lead. Fragrance for the show will be powered by our fantastic Oriental Lilies, Roses, Heliotrope and Buddleja. Show is complemented with some blue Agapanthus, various geraniums, caladium and Petunias.

Mother’s Day Bonsai Show
May 11 & 12

The Minnesota Bonsai Society Mother’s Day Weekend Bonsai Show is a unique opportunity to see privately owned bonsai in the Conservatory’s brand new bonsai home, The Ordway Gardens. Bonsai are ‘trees in pots’ and are an ancient art form from Japan that blends artistic vision and horticultural expertise. Each bonsai represents nature in miniature and creates appreciation for the aesthetic of great age and rugged form as represented by the trees.

Japanese Tea Ceremony
May 18

This is a rare opportunity to partake in a tranquil and traditional Japanese tea ceremony inside the Tea House of the Charlotte Partridge Ordway Japanese Garden. The ceremony lasts 45 minutes and guests are seated on the floor. Saturday’s ceremonies at 10:30am, 11:30am and 1:00pm, Sundays at 11:00am and 1:00pm. Advanced reservations are required. $35.

Artist & Photographer Hours
May 19     8:00 am to 10:00 am

Opportunity for artists and photographers to bring in their easels and tripods before hours. $5 per person.

Sparky The Sea Lion Show
May 25 through Labor Day

Have you ever wondered what a sea lion dreams about? Get a rare glimpse into Sparky’s dream world this summer—plentiful food, meeting walruses, visiting the rainforest, and ballroom dancing. Sparky Shows are at 11:00am daily with an additional show at 3:00pm on weekends.

Gorilla Forest Grand Opening!
June 6 thru June 9

Join us for a weekend of festivities as we celebrate the Grand Opening of Gorilla Forest! The weekend will include gorilla games, activities and crafts fun for the whole family. This $11 million dollar exhibit redesign and overhaul will feature seven gorillas, six of whom are new to Como Zoo, and the largest all-mesh gorilla enclosure in North America.

Chipotle Edible Garden Opening
June 14

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is serving up some scrumptious garden fun this summer in its edible garden! The Chipotle Edible Garden will feature an array of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers cultivated in an imaginative garden display. It is an exhibit designed to teach how to plant and prepare foods at home. The exhibit opens Friday, June 14 and trained staff will be onsite to answer questions. At 12:00pm daily, a member of our gardening staff will talk about growing techniques, ways to harvest and prepare food from your garden, natural pest control, and creative edible landscape design.
