Costumed & Non-Costumed Volunteer Opportunities for ZooBoo!

ZooBoo is a non-scary Halloween festival for families and young children. For this unique fall event, the grounds of Como Zoo transform into a world of fairytales and fun! Live costumed characters interact and entertain children. This magical event offers families a safe trick-or-treating alternative plus many Halloween surprises. Highlights include trick-or-treating at approximately ten Treat Stations, Live Entertainment, Pumpkin Bowling, Craft Activities, 200 Costumed characters and lots of surprises. All proceeds from ZooBoo benefit two of Minnesota’s most treasured year-round attractions, Como Zoo and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory.  ZooBoo is a production of Como Friends.

2017 is a special milestone year for ZooBoo.  Not only is it the 30th Anniversary of the event but it is also the final year of ZooBoo in its current design.  Thanks to the incredible support from our volunteers, the family tradition has been a wonderful fundraiser for Como Friends and Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, but due to significant construction of a new Seals and Sea Lion habitat in the heart of the campus and a need to refresh ZooBoo, it will come to a close this year. We will launch something new in 2019.

This year will still be the family-friendly event that the community loves and we hope you will join us!

We will host ZooBoo on October 21, 22, 28 and 29.  Volunteers are needed each of the four nights of ZooBoo in costumed and non-costumed positions. This spooktacular event takes the support and dedication of over 200 volunteers per night. From greeting visitors, make-up application, handing out “treats”, directing traffic and even getting costumed up to entertain young children and families, there’s so many ways volunteers can help!

Anyone over 17 is welcome to volunteer. Volunteers sign up for late afternoon to evening shifts.  Many non-costumed volunteers are also needed for event support. Volunteers need to be willing to work a four hour shift in standing positions outside in fall weather conditions. Individuals and groups interested in volunteering are encouraged to follow the link below to complete an application.

This application is for the ZooBoo event only.  Our general volunteer application is currently disabled so we can focus on recruitment for this event.  For those interested in ongoing volunteer opportunities with us, please visit this page again in early November.
